Discovering the Health Benefits of Tahitian Vanilla

A school in Moorea

While we were exploring the Tahitian island of Moorea by bicycle, we happened upon a school for children with special needs. The staff welcomed us in and gave us a tour, and we were even offered a place to stay for a few nights! The school, like so many in less well-developed regions of the world, struggles with their funding. We learned, with great interest that the staff has a delightful garden out the back where they grow vanilla beans, which they sell for the upkeep of the school.

Knowing how healthy vanilla is, I wondered if we could help the school by buying their vanilla beans for the Super Smoothie we are making, and will soon have ready for sale. We will talk more about this soon.

Most of us think of vanilla as being a mere food flavouring, but did you know that natural vanilla bean has several exciting and intriguing health benefits? I did a quick internet search and my edited findings are as follows.

You will note that I am emphasising that it is natural and not synthetic vanilla I am referring to, and preferably the whole bean.

The Surprising Roles and Functions of Natural Vanilla:

  1. Flavour Enhancer: Natural vanilla is one of the most popular flavourings used in a variety of foods and beverages, including baked goods, ice creams, chocolates, and coffees. It adds a sweet and aromatic taste that enhances the overall flavour profile of dishes.

  2. Aromatic Compound: The pleasant scent of vanilla is utilised in aromatherapy and perfumery. Its calming aroma is often used in candles, essential oils, and personal care products to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

  3. Source of Antioxidants: Vanilla contains compounds like vanillin that possess antioxidant properties, which can help protect the body against damage from free radicals.

The Health Benefits of Natural Vanilla:

  1. Antioxidant Properties: The antioxidants in vanilla may help neutralise free radicals, reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases and slowing the signs of ageing.

  2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Vanillin, a primary component of vanilla, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties.

  3. Mood Enhancement: Vanilla has been associated with reduced stress and anxiety levels. Inhaling vanilla aroma may promote feelings of calmness and well-being.

  4. Digestive Aid: Traditionally, vanilla has been used to soothe digestive issues. Its calming effect may help with stomach discomfort.

  5. Neuroprotective Potential: Some studies suggest that vanillin might have neuroprotective effects, which could support brain health.

  6. Supports Heart Health: Vanillin has been explored for its potential to lower cholesterol levels.
